Heat, to cook or melt food can originate from an oven, a microwave oven, a stove, a toaster, a grill, or the sun!
Lets help save Mother Earth and make a solar oven!
The sun the earth’s original and natural heating source. Without the sun, the earth would be cold and there would be no life. The sun is earth or environmentally friendly and creates no pollution. We also don’t need to pay for the gas or electricity to power it.
Can you think of solid foods that melt or turn to liquid when they heat up?
A few:
- Ice cream
- Butter
- Cheese
- Chocolate
- Coconut oil
Tools:
Empty shoebox with lid
Aluminum foil to cover all insides of box and inside of lid
Tape or glue
Scissors
Wooden stick, chopstick, or skewer
Favorite food to melt/ cook such as:
- Marshmallows
- Cheese
- Chocolate
- Crackers/ cookies
Cut 6 aluminum foil pieces to cover all insides of box and inside of lid. Use glue or tape to secure the foil. Place a plate with food inside the box atop the foil. Find a sunny place outside and prop the lid on an angle with the stick. Ensure the foil is facing toward the sun. The sun’s heat will bounce off the foil onto the food and cook or melt it. The box shape also helps keep the heat inside to cook or melt faster too.
How crazy is this? Keep the food in the sun approximately 10 minutes or until its melted. The hotter the sun, the faster it cooks!
Can you think of another way to cook or melt food in the hot summer? The street! But its not as clean.
